Alternative Medicine vs Conventional Medicine: What Works and What Doesn't?

As children, we have all experienced the homemade medicine our parents would

give us whenever we were sick, whether that is lemon/salt water for a sore throat,

chicken soup for a cold, or a wet towel on our foreheads for a fever. Most of the time

these methods would prove to be successful in making us feel better but through my

research, I would like to explore the extent of the effectiveness of such methods in

comparison to conventional medicines like over-the-counter or prescribed medications.

I'd also like to explore other forms of medicine that would fit into the genre of alternative

medicine. Alternative medicine encompasses a wide range of treatments, practices, and

therapies that are not part of mainstream or conventional medicine. It is based on the

belief that the body has the ability to heal itself and that it can be supported through

natural means, such as herbal remedies, acupuncture, and massage therapy. In

contrast, conventional medicine is based on the use of allopathic or traditional medical

practices, which often involve the use of medications, surgery, and other treatments that

are supported by scientific research. By researching this topic on my own id like to

eventually be able to answer important questions such as, What are the potential

benefits and risks associated with conventional medicine? What is the evidence base

for the effectiveness and safety of alternative medicine? And How do patients' needs,

values, and preferences factor into the decision about which approach to use?

Many have their own doubts surrounding the effectiveness of alternative

medicine mainly because alternative medicine often uses natural remedies that have

not been rigorously tested for safety or effectiveness in clinical trials. It can also be

controversial for the reason that it can be expensive and can have potential side effects

or interactions with other medications. In some cases, alternative medicine can also be

dangerous if it's used as a substitute for conventional medical care, particularly in cases

of serious illness or disease. Despite the controversy surrounding alternative medicine,

it is important to note that many patients do report finding it helpful and use it in

conjunction with conventional medicine.

In my research article, I will explore the different forms of alternative medicine

and their effectiveness, compare the safety and tolerability of alternative medicine,

assess the quality of evidence supporting the different uses of alternative medicine, and

more. I will do this by scouring different databases and websites for articles on this

topic. Articles such as “Complementary and Alternative Healthcare: Is it

Evidence-based?” by Syed Amin Tabish and “Why patients use alternative medicine:

results of a national study” by J A Astin. These along with others will ultimately help me

obtain a deeper knowledge of the topic and allow me to make educated claims and

arguments.

My ultimate goal as a researcher is to provide valuable insight into the

effectiveness and safety of different treatment options, as well as the potential benefits

and drawbacks of each approach. Additionally, research in this area can help to inform

healthcare providers, policymakers, and patients in making informed decisions about

their healthcare. Lastly, research can also provide evidence to help guide the

development of clinical practice guidelines, so that patients receive the most effective

and safe care possible.
