Refection

I have learned so much throughout this semester of writing for the sciences, in addition to improving my writing abilities, the course helped me better appreciate how crucial accuracy and clarity are in scientific communication. From writing brief overviews to creating detailed research articles. My ability to precisely communicate scientific concepts has increased as a result of the emphasis on using evidence-based arguments. In addition, I've also learned how to properly refer to articles and authors related to data citation and presentation. All things considered, this English course has given me the means to connect scientific knowledge with clear communication, giving me a solid foundation that will surely help me in both my academic and professional endeavors going forward.

Lisangel Tineo Prof. Nargiza Matyakubova  ENGL 21003  12/13/23 Research Paper  Alternative Medicine vs. Conventional Medicine The contrast between traditional and complementary medicine in today's changing healthcare environment has been generating discussion in the past years. The conflict between these two strategies has significant ramifications for patients, healthcare professionals, and the larger healthcare system. Conventional medicine has long been the primary form of healthcare, offering tried-and-true therapies and interventions that can save lives. It does this through conducting thorough research and adhering to established protocols. However, alternative medicine opposes the dominant paradigm by providing individualized and frequently unorthodox approaches to wellness. It does this by drawing heavily from holistic philosophies and centuries-old traditions. This essay explores the complexities of this ongoing dispute, pointing out the advantages, disadvantages...

Draft and Outline

Lisangel Tineo ENGL 21003 Prof. Nargiza Matyakubova 12/03/2023 Multimodal Research Project Concept map How effective is alternative medicine compared to and in conjunction with contemporary medicine? Claim: Advantages of Complementary Medicine Personalized Care Collaborative Care In addition to offering patients more options to explore and possibly improve their general well-being, complementary medicine may complement modern treatments. Combining the two strategies could result in a more complete solution that addresses mental, emotional, and physical health. Taking individual differences and preferences into account, alternative medicine enables a more patient-centered and personalized approach. In contrast to the frequently standardized treatments in modern medicine, this may help certain patients achieve better results. A collaborative care model, in which healthcare providers work together, can offer patients a wider range of treatment options, fostering a more comprehensive and p...

I interviewed a close relative of mine who has experience and deeper knowledge in relation to these topics. (This interview has been translated from Spanish to English). Question #1:Can you briefly introduce yourself and your background in both conventional and alternative medicine? Response: Hello! My name is Ramon Marrero, I am a general doctor, I completed my medical education and training in the Dominican Republic at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) [translation: Autonomous University of Santo Domingo]. I have experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions using evidence-based practices. While my primary focus is usually on conventional medicine, I also ...

Lisangel Tineo Prof. Nargiza Matyakubova English 21003 09/11/23 Annotated Bibliography Alternative Medicine vs Conventional Medicine “2. Americans’ Health Care Behaviors and Use of Conventional and Alternative Medicine.” Pew Research Center Science & Society, Pew Research Center, 2 Feb. 2017, www.pewresearch.org/science/2017/02/02/americans-health-care-behaviors-and-use-of-conven tional-and-alternative-medicine/.      This article mainly talks about the use of conventional medicine in American society and how healthcare providers and patients alike interact with alternative medicine. It states that the majority of Americans often do their own research when making decisions about treatment, either to learn more about the provider's recommendations or to check for other treatment options or potential side effects. It talks about specific alternative medicines like herbal dietary supplements, acupuncture, chiropractic, and energy therapies and explains that around one-th...

Research Proposal

Lisangel Tineo English 21003 6 November 2023 Research proposal Alternative Medicine vs Conventional Medicine: What Works and What Doesn't?      As children, we have all experienced the homemade medicine our parents would give us whenever we were sick, whether that is lemon/salt water for a sore throat, chicken soup for a cold, or a wet towel on our foreheads for a fever. Most of the time these methods would prove to be successful in making us feel better but through my research, I would like to explore the extent of the effectiveness of such methods in comparison to conventional medicines like over-the-counter or prescribed medications. I'd also like to explore other forms of medicine that would fit into the genre of alternative medicine. Alternative medicine encompasses a wide range of treatments, practices, and therapies that are not part of mainstream or conventional medicine. It is based on the belief that the body has the ability to heal itself and that it can ...

Lisangel Tineo Prof. Nargiza Matyakubova ENGL 21003, Section H 10/04/2023 Informative Report The Plastic Plight: Rise of Microplastics in our Oceans (Courtesy of nationalgeographic.org)      The presence of microplastics in the ocean has been a growing concern for the past several years. Due to the overproduction of plastic material, microplastics can be found in oceans, rivers, and even in the air we breathe. The existence of these microplastics has been causing many issues in our oceans and can have irreparable negative effects on marine life, causing an imbalance in their food chains and ecosystems.      Microplastics are small pieces of plastic that exist in our environment as a direct result of human activities. They can be described as polymers with a diameter of smaller than five millimeters (0.2 inches) and made of polyamide, polyethylene, and polyethylene terephthalate fibers and fragments. Many everyday products, such as bottles, bags, and c...

Self-Reflection on Memorandum__September 11th, Monday

The process of writing a memorandum was surprisingly easy for me, I enjoyed searching for topics and current issues that I could come up with solutions for. For my memorandum, I wrote about the issues with trash management in NYC which is an issue I experienced firsthand as a NYC resident. As for my experience in working in a group, I appreciated how roles were assigned and how everyone worked and completed their parts on time. The only challenging part for me was coming up with details for the context section, I had to research a few articles and find a way to implement the new information I learned in my memorandum.

Memorandum

To: Jessica Tisch, Commissioner of The NYC Department of Sanitation From: Lisangel Tineo, NYC resident and Undergraduate Biology major at The City College of New York. Date: August 11th 2023 Subject: Improvement of trash management in New York City (NYC) Trash management is an essential service in any city, and it is particularly important in New York City, where the amount of trash generated is very high. The current system of trash collection has several issues, including slow and ineffective service, overflowing trash receptacles, environmental pollution, and even an increase in rodents.  This has been an issue for several decades, mainly due to the large amount of trash generated by the city's dense population and the limited amount of landfill space available in the city. The city produces an estimated amount of 12,000 tons of trash every day, and the current collection and disposal are unable to keep up with the demand causing overflow of trash receptacles and increase...
